The year was 1957. The Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition founded the World Federation of International Music Competitions, together with 10 other Italian and European competitions. Its goal was to create an international platform that would unite the world’s various music competitions. The federation, which is headquartered in Geneva, has managed over the course of the last fifty years to bring together over 120 competitions under its aegis, becoming a real point of reference in this area.

On the occasion of an important milestone – the 60th anniversary of the Busoni Competition – the Municipality of Bolzano and the Busoni Foundation hosted the 59th WFIMC General Assembly, which has been held between 7 and 10 May 2015. This represented an opportunity to rethink the institution’s role and objectives and an important moment for reflection on the history and development of music competitions around the globe.
